_____________________________________ Team HMS Race In The 2009 Moosejaw Fall Adventure Challenge Adventure racing can best be described as races that integrate multiple disciplines into a single event, over a long period of time and over rugged terrain. Races can be solo or team events. The sport owes its origins to triathlon – swim, bike and run races. During the 1980s athletes took triathlon ‘off road’ and threw in a whole new mix of activities and adventure racing was born…
On October 17th, 2009, Team HMS participated in the 2009 Moosejaw Fall Adventure Challenge in Middleville Michigan. Each team required 2 people. HMS Team 1 consisted of HMS Director of Engineering Mike Brown and former HMS Engineer Scott L. HMS Team 2 consisted of Senior Packaging Engineer Matt Norton and Quality Specialist Dan O.
The race started with a 1 mile run to collect the race map. After which each team transported a canoe to start the 5 mile canoeing leg. Next, was a 4 mile trail run which led to the 9 mile off-road mountain bike course. After the grueling ride it was time for the field navigation section. The field map plotted out 12 check points, 3 of which were mandatory. The teams needed to navigate to each checkpoint using their positions, maps and compasses. The final portion of the course was an intense 2 mile bike ride back on paved surface.
Each member of the HMS team covered roughly 30 miles on foot, bike and canoe.
Overall, 97 teams participated, 62 completed the course. The team of Mike Brown and Scott L finished in 29th place with a time of 5:33:04. Team 2, with Dan O. and Matt Norton finished with a time of 5:59:17 – but were not ranked because of missing a checkpoint during the field navigation course.
HMS wanted to congratulate the teams of HMS on completing such a difficult race and representing HMS in the process!
