The History of HMS
1987 – It was the year the Bangles taught us how to “walk like an Egyptian” and our first look into the future of law enforcement as Robocop stomped onto the silver screen. Aviator jackets were for flyboys and ripped jeans everywhere were given the acid wash treatment. Women found perms to be rad and men kept the business up front and the party in the back via the mullet. Even with all these cultural advancements, something very special was about to happen to a small group of individuals in Troy, Michigan. It was the beginning of HMS Mfg. Co.
Like most success stories HMS started with humble beginnings. A band of siblings and engineers, including Janet, Nancy and Dave Sofy, helped pave the way to advance a product category that had been overlooked for decades. The product was the Ultimate Christmas Tree Stand.
With a strong product in the HMS arsenal it was time to sell. Calls started coming in. The first two on the list were Frank's Nursery & Crafts and Kmart. After seeing the products, they soon became HMS’s first customers.
1995 – After years of development and thousands of happy consumers, HMS created a new brand called E.Z. Christmas. It was under this name that the Rotating Christmas Tree Stand and Artificial Christmas Tree Stand were created. At the pinnacle of the Christmas tree stand business the Rotating Christmas Tree Stand became wildly popular and continues to bring Christmas cheer to thousands of homes each year.
Other products included Christmas Mountain, Mini Rotating Christmas Tree Stand and E.Z. Christmas Snowman Kit
With all these new products HMS continued its march to becoming a player in the consumer market.
1998 – With a foot in the door at huge retailers like Target & Kmart, it was time for HMS to show it’s flexibility and talent pool.
After several months of meetings and debating, HMS was ready to start developing outside the realm of Christmas products and dive into consumer products for the home. Very quietly HMS developed laundry products for Kmart under a private label. The line was a success and opened the door for more Home Essentials products in other departments.
1999 – With HMS’s laundry baskets & wastebaskets taking off and E.Z. Christmas sales doing great, the focus was shifted to Halloween. Many different products began taking shape.
2000 – HMS is awarded private label business for the Martha Stewart account at Kmart. HMS is one of the first companies to develop plastic housewares products under the Martha Stewart brand.
2001 – Target places orders for a Back-2-College wastebasket. “Trashed” becomes a big hit among college students.
2003 – HMS introduces a new name for the housewares product line called Home Logic. Later, this name will become the main focus on every product that HMS develops.
This is the first year Target offers Home Logic their first 4 foot section in the Laundry & Waste and Storage & Organization Departments.
2004 – Home Logic Pet is introduced. Products include new storage options for pet food with snap-lock lids and 3 sizes to choose from.
2005 – Home Logic sells product to Walmart. Home Logic develops new product lines for Storage, Craft & Mudrooms.
2006 – Home Logic becomes the flagship brand name. Halloween & Christmas follow suit to expand our brand.
2007 – Home Logic products can currently be found in over 10,000 stores of popular retailers all across America.
